English School (circa 1675-80)

A Nobleman, wearing silver armour with gilt studs, white lace jabot and curled full-bottomed wig.
Watercolour on vellum, original gold frame, the reverse with applied leaf design.
Oval, 73mm. (2 7/8ins.) high

Footnotes

It has not been possible to attribute this carefully drawn portrait to a particular miniaturist and it may be by a itinerant artist working at the court of Charles II. The use of multiple colours to describe the contours of the face and the use of the outmoded blue background give no clues to the artist's identity.
