Footnotes

The present lot was painted in 1906 when King Haakon, Queen Maud and Prince Olav were visiting England. The sittings were done at Buckingham Palace and Appleton House, Sandringham. Massey fondly recalls her sitting with Prince Olaf in "Kings, Commoners and Me" pp.72-76.

Princess Maud of Wales (Maud Charlotte Mary Victoria) was granddaughter of Queen Victoria, and later Queen consort of Norway, as the wife of King Haakon VII of Norway, whom she married in 1896 when he was still Prince Carl of Denmark. They had one child, Prince Alexander (later King Olav V of Norway), who was born in 1903. He married Princess Martha of Sweden in 1929 and following the German invasion of Norway, Olaf took an active part in the struggle for liberation. He assumed supreme command of the Norwegian forces in 1944 and returned to Norway in 1945. He was succeeded by his only son, Harold V.
