Lady Maud Evelyn Hamilton, daughter of the 2nd Marquess of Abercorn. married in 1869, Henry 5th Marquess of Lansdowne at Westminster Abbey. Together they had four children, Evelyn, Henry, Charles and Beatrix. From 1905 to 1909 she was a Lady of the Bedchamber to Queen Alexandra. She held the office of Extra Lady of the Bedchamber between 1910 and 1925. She was invested as a Dame of Grace, Order of St. John of Jerusalem; Companion of Honour; Dame Grand Cross, Order of the British Empire in 1920; and Lady, Royal Order of Victoria and Albert. She was decorated with the Imperial Order of the Crown of India.

The present lot is recorded on p.15-16 of "Kings, Commoners and Me" where Massey describes the Marchioness "Lady Landsdowne herself, whose beautiful aristocratic profile was ideal for miniature work". Massey was commissioned to paint miniatures of Lady Landsdowne's daughter, future son-in-law and brother. These early commissions were important in promoting Massey in aristocratic circles.
