Massey was commissioned by Mr Ivor Ferguson to paint his mother Lady Paston Cooper. A life-size pastel of the latter is illustrated in "Kings, Commoners and Me" facing p.80. Lady Paston Cooper's husband was Sir Astley Paston Cooper, a Crimean veteran. She had married him as her second husband following the death of her first husband Mr J.S. Fergusson, an Officer of the Life Guards. She was popular in Military society and worked for various soldiers' charities.
