Thomas Roth (British, fl.1803-1828)

A Lady, wearing green cloak with white lining and small silk cap, imploring a man, wearing fur collar tied with ribbon.
Enamel, inscribed on the counter-enamel painted by Tho Roth - from Giorgione, gilded composition frame.
Rectangular, 108mm (4 1/4in) high
Exhibited: Royal Academy, London, 1828, no.646

Footnotes

The prototype for the present enamel was in the collection of Lord Radstock. It has not been possible to establish the identity of the prototype, but it is unlikely that it is still attributed to Giorgione. It is more probable that today the attribution would be given to artist such as Paris Bordone or Palma Vecchia.

Roth's enamels are much praised by Daphne Foskett in her Dictionary of British Miniature Painters.
