Footnotes
Gustaf of Holstein-Gottorp of Vasa (1799-1877), son of Gustaf IV Adolf, King of Sweden and his consort, Frederica of Baden. When he was ten years old his father was deposed by a military coup and the family were forced into exile. The Gustavian party tried to get him accepted as crown prince in 1809 and 1810, but were unsuccessful. He was a sometime Crown Prince of Sweden and later assumed the title Prince of Vasa. He was also a Lt. Field Marshal in the Austrian Army, which explains the uniform in the present lot. He married his cousin Princess Luise of Baden in 1830 and divorced her 1844.
