Charles Marie Joseph Dubois de Ferrière (1772-1829), wearing Brigade General uniform, scarlet coat with gold epaulettes, black collar and front embroidered with gold foliate motif, gold belt with belt plate decorated with three fleurs de lys and an escutcheon containing the cipher of Louis XVIII, the badges of the Orders of the Legion of Honour, the Reunion, St.Louis and of the Fleur de Lys at his breast.
Signed on obverse and dated twice 1814/ D. Du Caju pt./ 1836, gilt-mounted rectangular wood frame.

Dubois began his military career in 1788 as Sub-Lieutenant in the French Dragoons and became a Lieutenant in 1798. He then transferred to the Garde Hollandaise where he became Colonel in 1809. He fought in Brabant (1809), Russia (1812) and France (1814). He was created a Baron of the Empire in 1810 At the Restoration of the Bourbons in 1814 he was created Field Marshal and received the Legion of Honour. Despite this, he rejoined Napoleon during 'Les Cent-Jours' and was decommissioned in 1815.
In this posthumous portrait of Dubois, De Caju has shown his sitter at his highest moment of glory in 1814.
