Hau attended the Academy in St. Petersburg, where he obtained a medal in 1836 and became a member in 1849. After travelling in Germany and Italy, he settled in St. Petersburg in 1840. His clientele were taken from the court and the Russian aristocracy, such as this portrait of an unknown lady painted circa 1855.
