Footnotes
This charming view of Tyneside shows the townscape of North Shields in some detail. The twin lighthouses, one on the foreshore and the other on the bluff beyond, were the most distinctive features of the town for many years and Carmichael has also shown the line of embrasures of Clifford’s Fort (on the extreme right) which guarded the harbour entrance. The small vessel with the lugsails in the foreground is probably a traditional keel, a river craft usually measuring about 22 tons burden, which brought coal and other bulk cargoes downriver for transfer into sea-going ships.
There are two views of North Shields by Carmichael in the Laing Art Gallery, Newcastle upon Tyne, dated in the 1840's and Diana Villar dates our picture to this decade.
