Footnotes
It has been suggested that this lively work depicts a demonstration of solidarity for Anglo-Danish relations during the prolonged territorial dispute which became known as the ‘Schleswig-Holstein Question’. This quarrel about the border between Denmark and Prussia occasioned intense diplomatic activity in the middle decades of the nineteenth century and Britain consistently took Denmark’s part, particularly after the marriage of the Prince of Wales and Princess Alexandra of Denmark in 1863.
