Footnotes
The ruined cathedral stands within the castle precincts and its east end formed part of the old castle wall. The castle complex was originally enclosed by a fortified wall erected by the Earl of Derby in 1593 which also contains the three-storied tower or peel from which the town derives its name; this latter feature is clearly visible in this painting standing directly above the pierhead lighthouse on the left.
