Exhibited :- Royal Academy, 1776, no. 279, as 'The south-west view of the island of Lundy in the Bristol Channel, belonging to Sir John Borlace (sic) Warren, Bart'.
Literature :- 'Dominic Serres', Alan Russett, Antique Collectors' Club, Woodbridge, 2001, pp. 103-106, illustrated colour plate 41, page 103 (printed in reverse).Although it is listed as measuring 29 x 45in., Alan Russett now believes the dimensions he was given for the two pictures in his book were incorrect and that our pictures are the originals painted for Sir John Borlase Warren.
Painted as a companion piece to the preceding lot, this work lacks the narrative element of the other painting but compensates for that by emphasising the inhospitable terrain of the island. Perhaps this rugged isolation was a factor in persuading Borlase Warren to buy it in the first place but even if that were not the case, the lively waters surrounding it gave him and his equally new yacht plenty of scope for enjoyment – little wonder it was said of him at the time that 'he amused himself in the Bristol Channel.'
We would like to thank Alan Russett and Jane Dowling, Collections Manager, Bermuda Maritime Museum for their help in cataloguing this lot.
