Footnotes
Launched in 1887 as the 'Theodora', the subsequently named 'Athena' was designed by J.H. Ritchie and built by Gourlay Bros. at Dundee. Rigged as a three-masted screw schooner, she was registered at 477½ tons gross (242 net) and measured 165 feet in length with a 27½ foot beam. Originally owned by Mr. J.T. Morton of Caterham Valley, Surrey, she was bought, sold and renamed several times during the ensuing fifteen years until purchased by Mr. Charles E. Gibson of Boston, Massachussetts, in 1903. Renaming her 'Athena', he only kept her for about five years when she was sold to Ralph E. Towle, also of Boston, who kept her at least until the outbreak of war in 1914.
