This alluring view of the seafront and its backdrop at Ramsey, Isle of Man, is a rare example of Wilkinson’s work as a poster artist. In his autobiography (p. 19), he recalls his very first poster – done for the Booth Steamship Company of Liverpool in 1903 – which was so well received that he was approached by the London & North Western Railway to design something similar for them in 1905. The L.N.W.R. had initially only wanted to advertise their Holyhead to Dublin steamers but Wilkinson’s second poster was also so successful that their production soon became a useful adjunct to his main work as an artist. Over time he accepted numerous other poster commissions, the most famous of which was his set – in collaboration with fellow Royal Academicians – executed for the London, Midland & Scottish Railway in 1924.
Indeed the world record price for a painting by Wilkinson was achieved for a work commissioned for the Caledonian Steam Packet Company Timetable in 1909, 'The Steel Screwsteamer 'Duchess of Argyll' off the Isle of Arran' (sold, Bonhams, 5th. September 2001, lot 266, £47,000).
The example offered in this catalogue is one of a number executed for the Isle of Man Steam Packet Company and features the southern (lower) end of the seafront at Ramsey dominating which is the Albert Tower built to commemorate the visit of Queen Victoria and Prince Albert in 1847.
