A Rare 70-Bore Flintlock Pocket Pistol
By T. Cole Of London, Late 17th Century

With turn-off cannon barrel with muzzle-ring and fitted with hinged retaining link, foliate engraved octagonal breech section becoming polygonal and signed along the top flat, plain tang, signed border engraved rounded lock (jaw screw replaced) decorated above the signature and on the tail with scrolling foliage issuing from a profile human head and terminating in a monster's head, moulded half-stock (butt partly replaced) with carved apron around the barrel tang, iron mounts comprising side-plate pierced and chiselled with foliage, shaped escutcheon retained by tacks, globose pommel engraved with scrolling strawberry foliage, long slender trigger-plate engraved with a design of foliage, and button trigger without guard (some wear and light pitting overall), London proof marks and maker's mark

Thomas 1 Cole was apprenticed to Robert Silke and turned over to Robert Brooke in 1669. He was made free of the Gunmakers' Company in 1677, submitted his proof piece in 1690, and was Contractor to Ordnance between 1693-9
