A Fine And Rare Cased 16-Bore Flintlock Sporting Gun
By John Manton & Son, No. 6 Dover Street, London, No. 5826 For 1812

With browned twist two-stage barrel with turned girdle and silver fore-sight, the breech engraved 'Dover Street London' along the top flat and then becoming sixteen-sided, case-hardened recessed patent breech with gold line, rectangular gold-lined maker's stamp, and platinum-lined touch-hole, border engraved case-hardened tang finely decorated with martial trophies, signed border engraved case-hardened serial numbered lock decorated with a hare on the clipped tail and with engraved 'French' cock, rainproof pan and blued steel-spring with large roller, figured walnut half-stock (light bruising) with chequered grip, border engraved blued steel mounts comprising butt-plate with two gundogs on the tang, and serial numbered trigger-guard with a trophy of arms centred on a boar's head, blued trigger-plate with pineapple finial, horn fore-end cap, vacant silver escutcheon and barrel-bolt escutcheons, blued barrel-bolts, original brass-mounted ramrod (worm cap missing), and most of its original finish: in original lined and fitted mahogany case with accessories including patch-cutter serial numbered to the gun, combination tool, flint wallet, three shot dispensers and a later Bartram powder-flask with bag-shaped body covered in black leather, the interior of the lid with trade label for circa 1815 to 1820, the exterior with circular brass escutcheon and flush-fitting carrying handle, the whole set in very fine original condition
