A Rare Cased 50-Bore Metford Patent Percussion Match Rifle
By The Manchester Ordnance & Rifle Co., Retailed By George Gibbs, 29 Corn Street, Bristol, No. C918, Circa 1862-4

With blued barrel rifled with five shallow grooves, engraved 'Metford's Patent, 37' along the top flat at the breech, and with retailer's name and address beyond, windage adjustable Goodwin patent fore-sight and folding adjustable back-sight, case-hardened breech engraved with Metford emblem within foliage and with engraved platinum plug, case-hardened tang originally fitted with Vernier folding peep-sight (missing), signed case-hardened lock with safety-catch in front of the hammer and engraved with the company mark on the tail, figured half-stock with chequered pistol-grip and fore-end, each with dark horn cap, case-hardened steel mounts comprising chequered butt-plate and serial numbered trigger-guard, vacant silver escutcheon, chequered trigger, no provision for a ramrod, and most of its original finish: in contemporary lined and fitted canvas-covered case (accessories missing) with tin of 'Cloth Lubricators For Rigby's Patent Five-Ridged Rifles', the interior of the lid with retailer's trade label, Birmingham proof marks
