A Fine Russian (Tula) 25-Bore Barrel From A Flintlock Sporting Rifle
Reign Of Empress Elizabeth (1741-1762), Mid-18th Century

Of octagonal section slightly swamped towards the muzzle and rifled with eight grooves, the three top flats decorated overall against a finely stippled gold ground with symmetrical designs of intertwined foliage chiselled in low relief and inhabited by birds, animals including hunting hounds and a unicorn, figures including a harpy, and two trophies of arms, towards the centre the monogram of Empress Elizabeth, a crown above with lion supporters, gold-lined touch-hole, chiselled front sight and folding-leaf back-sight, and tang chiselled with foliage against a finely stippled gold ground
