A Spanish Cup-Hilt Rapier
Late 17th Century

With long slender tapering blade of flattened hexagonal section, the forte with central fuller stamped 'Thomas' on one side, and 'Aiala' on the other, hilt comprising large cup-guard with turned rim and embossed and pierced overall with scrolling foliage and flowerheads, plain guardapolvo, straight spirally twist quillons with button terminals, knuckle-guard en suite, compressed diagonally fluted pommel, and later wire-bound grip
