A Swept-Hilt Rapier In German Late 16th Century style
19th Century

With tapering double-edged blade of flattened diamond section etched over most of its length on each side with labelled saints against stippled blackened grounds, one side with the Virgin Mary and Christ child in splendour, foliated strapwork beyond, and with Christ in splendour with foliated strapwork beyond on the other, rectangular ricasso struck with crowned 'S' mark in a shield on both sides, steel hilt of flattened rounded bars etched overall with scrolling foliage and comprising downbent rear quillon, recurved knuckle-guard, side-ring on each side linking the arms and forming a loop on the inside and projecting out under the side-ring on the outside, faceted ovoidal pommel etched en suite and with button finial, and grip bound with twisted silver wire between two silver ferrules each with gilt pellets
