With slightly curved fullered blade double-edged towards the point and brightly etched against a matt ground along most of its length on one side with maker's name and address, crowned 'VR' monogram and a trophy of arms, all on a ground of foliate strapwork, and along the other with the presentation inscription between foliated strapwork, regulation hilt (some surface rust) of two bars swept-up to join the knuckle-guard, partly chequered pommel and back-piece, wire-bound chequered gutta-percha grip, and original bullion sword-knot, in its original steel scabbard (rust patinated) with white-metal locket, chape and suspension mount each cast, pierced and chased with foliated strapwork, and with two rings for suspension

The presentation inscription reads: 'Presented 15th Decr. 1863. By The Duke of Northumberland To 1st Lieut. John Tate. Of The Percy Artillery Volunteers, To Replace A Sword Given To His Ancestor Cuthbert Barker. Who Was Killed By The Side Of His Chieftain Sir Ralph Percy, At Hedgeley Moor. - A.D. 1464.'
