With bright slightly curved pipe-backed blade double-edged towards the point and etched over half its length on each side with crowned 'VR' monogram and scrolling foliage, one side with battle honours to Hindoostan, each on a banner, and on the other with the presentation inscription, regulation gilt-brass half-basket guard of fluted bars incorporating a crowned 'WIV' monogram in an oval, pierced folding inner-guard, and wire-bound shagreen-covered grip, in original brass scabbard with two rings for suspension

The presentation inscription reads: 'From Colonel Croker C.B. To Major E.B. Owen. 17th Regt. 5th Novr. 1847'
Major Edward Barry Owen entered the army on 26 April 1828 and retired on 5 November 1847. Colonel William Croker entered the army on 27 May 1803 and served in the East Indies between 1804-1824. He commanded the 17th during the whole of the campaign in Afghanistan and Beloochistan including the capture of Ghaznee and Khelat. He arrived in Bombay in command of the 17th in May 1836, being the only British Army officer landing twice in the East Indies in the same corps
