An Indo-Persian Shamshir
Dated 1197 A.H. Corresponding To 1782 A.D.

With curved finely watered single-edged blade with two gold-lined cartouches on one side at the forte, the first containing a Persian inscription 'The slave of the king of trusteeship Abbas the second', the second dated and inscribed 'His [God's] servant, Asadullah', hilt comprising watered steel quillon-block retaining traces of gold-damascening and with pointed langets, quillons with button terminals, grip-strap gold-damascened with birds and foliage, rounded bone grips (one split), and steel pommel-cap retaining traces of gold-damascening, in original wooden scabbard covered in black leather (minor worming and damage) with longitudinal lines over each side, and watered steel suspension mounts en suite with the quillon-block (chape missing)

An old typewritten label attached reads: 'In 1757 Clive defeated Surajah Dowlah at the battle of Plassey. The English nominee Mir Jaffir, then became Nawab of Bengal._ _ _ This sword was given to an Ancestor of Lord Redesdale by Mir Jaffir, as a sword once having belonged to Abbas the Great, Shah of Persia; The blade bears the monogram of Shah Abbas and the signature of Assad Allah-(Lion of God)- the smith?' and 'The blade is of 'Damascus' steel of the pattern know as Kirk Narduban - steps of Mohommet. The inscription reads - Abbas slave of the king of the universe. Work of Assad Allah 1610.'
