A Victorian Scottish Officer's Basket-Hilted Broadsword
19th Century

With fullered tapering blade etched with thistles, a trophy of arms and foliage along half its length on each side of the forte, regulation steel basket-guard of slender bars of circular section framing shaped panels with heart-shaped piercings and retaining its leather liner faced with red woollen cloth, fluted bun-shaped pommel with red tassel, and wire-bound fishskin-covered grip, in original black leather scabbard (repaired above the chape) with linear engraved steel mounts, and two rings for suspension (steel parts rust patinated overall)
