A Fine Cased Pair Of 40-Bore Flintlock Duelling Pistols
By Joseph Manton, Davies Street, Berkley Square, London, No. 4313 For 1807

With scratch rifled heavy rebrowned twist octagonal barrels each with silver fore-sight, case-hardened patent recessed breeches each with platinum line, platinum-lined maker's stamp and touch-hole, case-hardened tangs each incorporating a back-sight and finely engraved with martial trophies and a starburst, signed border engraved detented locks each decorated en suite and with engraved safety-catch, roller bearing on a ramp, and rainproof pan, the steels each engraved 'Joseph Manton Patent' and numbered '2028' and '2029' respectively, finely figured walnut half-stocks some bruising) numbered in ink on the inside of each fore-end, rounded chequered butts, engraved blued steel mounts (some loss of finish) including butt-caps, serial numbered trigger-guards, and trigger-plates each with pineapple finial, vacant silver escutcheons and barrel-bolt escutcheons, horn fore-end caps, original horn-tipped ramrods, and much of their original finish: in original lined and fitted mahogany case (accessories missing, one compartment lid replaced), the interior of the lid with maker's trade label for circa 1805-1810 (minor damage), the exterior with brass flush-fitting carrying handle and circular escutcheon
