A Cased Pair Of French 54-Bore Percussion Target Pistols
By Alphonse Caron A Paris, Arqr. De S.M. L'Empereur, Circa 1850

With blued octagonal sighted barrels each signed in full along the top flat and rifled with twelve grooves, foliate scroll engraved breeches, tangs each with blued back-sight, locks (defective) and mounts, the latter comprising shaped pommels with blued baluster finials and spur trigger-guards, ebony half-stocks carved with symmetrical foliage against a stippled ground on the fore-ends and on each side of the fluted butts, and retaining some of their original blued and dull grey finish (areas of surface rust and pitting, triggers seized): in original fitted case lined in blue velvet (some staining) with full accessories, the interior of the lid with stamped and gilt maker's name and address, the exterior veneered in ebonised rosewood, the lid with brass stringing and shaped brass escutcheon engraved with owner's initials 'AP' in gothic letters, complete with its wool-lined leather travelling cover, the lid tooled with further owner's initials
