A Fine English Rapier
Circa 1640

With slender tapering blade of flattened diamond section with central fuller on each side of the forte incised respectively 'Francisco' and 'Viz En Toledo', the iron hilt retaining much of its original gilding and chiselled in relief with portrait busts, demi-figures, masks and foliage, comprising asymmetrical cup-guard pierced and chiselled with foliated scrollwork centred on a cartouche chiselled in relief with a horseman on each side and joined to a side-bar above by two monster-headed bars, the former each extending to join the knuckle-guard and chiselled with a central cartouche bearing a portrait bust, recurved quillons and globular pommel en suite, the latter with prominent button finial, and wooden grip with remains of twisted wire binding
