An English Rapier
Mid-17th Century

With tapering blade of hollow triangular section double-edged towards the point and retaining traces of etched foliage, figures and inscriptions over each side of the forte, iron hilt comprising symmetrical shell-guard, each side rising to a scroll and enclosing a convex plate finely pierced with a design of overlapping scales (minor damage), an outer side-ring above with central fluted swelling feature and linked on each side by slender scrolled bars to the knuckle-guard, downcurved arms, recurved quillons each with fluted swelling terminal, faceted swelling pommel between punched and chiselled petals, button finial, and later wooden grip bound with twisted silver wire (some wear and pitting overall)
