A Rare English Rapier
Circa 1640

With tapering double-edged blade of flattened oval section, iron hilt comprising cup-guard pierced with three rows of graduated ovals on the outside and a single row of ovals along the inside, centred on a circular petalled plate, the knuckle-guard linked on the outside by scrolled bars to a side-ring above the cup-guard and each with central bud-shaped feature, bifurcated thumb-ring, chiselled quillon-block, curved quillons (one missing) with bud-shaped terminals, large globular pommel pierced and chiselled with foliage involving a demi-figure on each side, and original spirally fluted wooden grip (damaged, wire binding partly replaced, painted with pitch overall)
