The first embroidered panel neatly worked in silk threads to linen ground in a complex pulled threads work technique with diamond trellis format filled with motifs including crowns, flowers, birds, stars, a dog and a squirrel. Inscribed 'Lieutenant John Hiatt Royal Navy 1807'. Glazed and framed. 6.5x9.5in(16.5x24cm) together with a facsimile copy of his naval biography from the Public Record Office. The second embroidered panel also worked in pulled thread technique with silk threads to canvas ground with a central stylized tulip surrounded by flower, star and bird motifs. Inscribed 'Ann Fishley October 1803. Glazed and framed. 5.5x6.3in(14x16cm) (2)

John Hiatt entered the Navy in 1784 and served on many vessels including the Temeraire. He married Ann Fishley who was the maker of the smaller sampler.
