"Horatia N. Ward"
Horatia Nelson Nelson

Autograph letter signed ("Horatia N. Ward"), to Nicholas Harris Nicolas, asking for his advice in dealing with Lord John Russell ("his little Lordship") and hoping that he is no longer being pestered by unsavoury characters ("...I trust your two plagues Evans & Colbourn have ceased to annoy you..."), 3 pages, 8vo, light dust-staining, 3 February 1847

Footnotes

Horatia, daughter of Nelson and Lady Hamilton, had met Nicolas, editor of The Dispatches and Letters of Lord Nelson (1844-46) in 1844. His investigations had led Sir Harris to the conclusion that Nelson was, indeed, Horatia's father but she continued to protest that Emma was not her mother. The matter was to be cleared up only with the emergence of the Nelson and Hamilton Papers, in the Morrison collection, six years after her death. The twin plagues to which she alludes in this letter are Henry Colbourn, publisher of The Letters and Dispatches and Evans, an atypically disreputable dealer in Nelsoniana (a letter from Lord Spencer to Nelson, "lately in the possession of Mr. Evans, of Maddox Street, Hanover Square", is printed by Nicolas, iv, pp.115-6n).
