Horatio Nelson

Lock of Lord Nelson's hair, with a piece of black thread tie, contained in a paper folder inscribed by Sir (Nicholas) Harris Nicolas: "Part of the Hair of Lord Nelson's queue"

Footnotes

A lock of Nelson's hair, taken from the pigtail that was sent by Captain Hardy to Lady Hamilton after Trafalgar, the remnants of which are now at the National Maritime Museum. Nicholas Harris Nicolas, editor of The Dispatches and Letters of Lord Nelson (1844-46) presumably acquired this lock, with other Nelson relics that had belonged to Emma, from Alderman Smith's widow (see note on Nelson's letter to Fanny, 10 May 1799, above, and the correspondence with Prince Albert concerning the Trafalgar coat, below). The hair, which is sandy coloured and touched with grey, is similar to a lock sold in our Phillips rooms, 15 June 2001 (lot 271 for £4000), and another in our rooms, 14 March 1996 (lot 360 for £2000), the gold-mounted Northesk example, Sotheby's London, 13 December 1994 (lot 51 for £5500), as well as what remains of the pigtail itself, and a further lock at the Royal Naval Museum, Portsmouth.
