"You are to proceed... to join Lord Nelson"
Francis Middleton Barham, Lord

Letter signed ("Barham"), First Lord of the Admiralty, to Admiral Sir John Duckworth, ordering him to join Nelson's fleet ("...You are now to proceed with the Superb, Powerful and Acasta (if ready) to join Lord Nelson direct...your request to have your flag in the Superb has been acceded to..."), and ordering him not to delay sailing even if the Acasta is not ready, one page, 4to, integral blank, docketed, spotted and torn, with traces of mounting, Admiralty, 28 October 1805

Footnotes

Written a week after Trafalgar, the news of which had yet to reach England (on 5 November). Duckworth reached the fleet before Cadiz on 15 November, taking charge of the blockade. This letter could be said to have been issued in response to Nelson's letter to Barham of 5 October (see lot 146 in our sale of 5 July 2005).
