"Single and Double Pendants", illustrated with 20 pendants in watercolour, issued by Nelson in the Mediterranean, and signed by his Captain of the Fleet, George Murray, addressed to Sir Robert Barlow, Captain of the Triumph, docketed "Triumph Lord Nelson/ 7th Pend.t Sheet/ Rec.d 8th July", Amphion, 6 July 1803; together with other naval papers relating to Barlow, comprising a printed order regarding the Triumph's returns of casks, signed by Troubridge and other commissioners (18 July 1803); a copy of Nelson's list of rendezvous issued from the Amphion off Toulon, 17 July 1803; a copy of the London Gazette for 21-25 April 1801 containing Barlow's dispatch on his capture of L'Africaine, and printed regulations for officers' uniforms, signed by Rear Admiral Sir Isaac Coffin, 1804, folio, minor wear at folds, dust-staining etc., 1801-1804

Nelson flew his flag from the 32-gun frigate Amphion, Captain Samuel Sutton, between May and July 1803. Captain Barlow, the recipient, had distinguished himself as an enterprising frigate captain who, in the 44-gun Phoebe, had captured the Néréide, 36 guns, and the Africaine, 44 guns. He was knighted in 1801 and given command of the 74-gun Triumph, in which he joined Nelson's Mediterranean fleet: see also lot 37.
