"the Actions with the Enemy in the 28th and 29th of May and 1st of the present Month"
Richard Earl Howe

Printed 'Public Orders' signed ("Howe"), communicating to the fleet the King's "highest Satisfaction in the Account reported by the Admiral, of the Bravery and Gallant Behaviour of the Officers and Men, serving in the Fleet, in the Actions with the Enemy in the 28th and 29th of May and 1st of the present Month", together with the thanks of both Houses, and of the City of London, 3 pages on a bifolium, folio, some spotting and paper-losses at folds (just affecting signature), Queen Charlotte, at Spithead, 20 June 1794; together with a manuscript Order of Battle and General Order of Sailing, signed ("Howe"), addressed to Captain Barlow of the Aquilon, the repeating frigate in the centre division under the Commander-in-Chief, 3 pages, folio, split at folds, the Charlotte, at Spithead, 7 August 1794

Footnotes

Howe congratulates his fleet on the Battle of the Glorious First of June, fought the month before; a victory that was to mark an auspicious start to the war with France which was to last, with one small interval, for twenty-three years and to result in Britain's acknowledged supremacy at sea for a further century. It was a victory, furthermore, that redeemed Howe's reputation following his failure to defeat d'Estaing during the American War of Independence. Captain Robert Barlow, to whom these papers were sent, had taken part in the battle, and was later to serve in the Mediterranean under Nelson: for further of his papers, see lots 33 and 37.
