A Spectacular Peridot

Paksitan
Faceted by Darrell Jang, 2004 AGTA award winner

A square, cushion-shaped gem of brilliant green, from one of the most sought-after localities for peridot, with concave faceting to the pavilion, having excellent clarity and luster. The lapidary process of concave cutting is first begun like flat faceting to shape the stone and then concave cuts are placed where the faceter wishes to put them. This implies taking the mast with its stone off the flat faceting machine and placing it on a concave-cutting machine. The stone is then centered over the mandrel, a rod-like cylinder that spins like a lathe, to cut, pre-polish and polish the stone. After that is concluded, the mast is transferred back to the faceting machine for flat-facet polishing. The process is significantly more involved and time-consuming than regular polishing of standard cuts—but the result is a stone which returns a great deal more fire and brilliance to the eye of the beholder. Weighing approximately 14.82 carats and measuring 13.7 x 13.7 x 10.5 mm.
