Near Arusha, Tanzania
Faceted by Andrew Gulij
Discovered in the Arusha area of Tanzania only about three years ago was a green variety of the mineral zoisite, known as chrome (or green) tanzanite, as it owes its color to chromium. Having approximately the color of green tourmaline, this lovely stone is notable not only for its rare color but also for the fact that it is a gem which has not undergone any heat treatment as tanzanites so frequently do. Given the pleochroic nature of the mineral it displays two shades of green as well as bluish-green depending on the axis of viewing. Available in only very limited supply, this unusual variety of tanzanite is sure to be of interest to the collector. Weighing approximately 2.5 carats and measuring 8.2 x 7.6 x 7.3mm.
