Hambergite

Katche village, Molo District
near Momeik, Shan State, Myanmar

Found in localities as diverse as Norway, Madagascar and San Diego, hambergite which is frequently associated with tourmaline (rubelite) and petalite is found in pegmatites. Its original type locality was in southern Norway, where it was discovered by Axel Hamberg, but the material from that locality is typically yellowish in color and non-gem. The present stone is from a newer find in Burma, and is of the gem variety. The colorless, pear-shaped stone displays excellent transparency and a strong double-refraction for which the mineral is known. Weighing approximately 2.76 carats and measuring 15.3 x 8.3 x 4.5mm.
