Bastnaesite, is one of a few rare earth carbonate minerals, constituents of the earth’s near-surface crust. Bastnaesite gets its name from its type locality, Bastnas Mine, Riddarhyttan, Vastmanland, Sweden. Its actual chemical composition is Cerium Lanthanum Yttrium Carbonate Fluoride. A scarce mineral, it is available in only small supply. The present stone is a large example given the typical crystal habit which normally includes small hexagonal rounded flakes and short prismatic crystals. A deep, rich brown defines this well-cut pear-shaped stone of this rare mineral; it possesses excellent clarity and luster. Weighing approximately 5.21 carats and measuring 11.8 x 8.0 x 6.0mm.
