Brazil
By Paolo Costagli
This exceptional gem is notable not only for its large size and superb faceting but also its lack of heat treatment. The vast majority of aquamarines commercially available on the market today are heat enhanced to bring out a bluer color. The present stone is rare for lovely slightly greenish-blue color, specific evidence of its lack of heat treatment. Recently refaceted and reduced to a more wearable size, the stone is a true antique cushion-shaped cut. Mr. Costagli was inspired by the famous diamond, the Cullinan III of the British Crown jewels, when he instructed his lapidary to fashion this jewel in the likeness of that historic diamond. Simply mounted in 18K white gold and prong-set so as not to detract from the beauty of the stone, maker’s mark for Paolo Costagli.
Accompanied by an AGTA certificate number 93012504 dated February 27, 2004, stating that the aquamarine shows no indication of heat treatment. Weighing approximately 405.25 carats and measuring 45.80 x 45.74 x 34.15mm.
