Russia
Staurolite is memorable for its twinned crystals that form into the shape of a cross. The name is derived the Greek for cross. The twin is a classic penetration twin where it appears as if two crystals grew into and out of each other. It actually forms in one of two types; one that is nearly 90 degrees, which is more sought-after, and one that is nearly 60 degrees, which is more common. Associated with Christianity as a symbol for the cross it has also been used as an amulet for centuries and has been given the name "Fairy Stone" or Fairy Cross". The crystals in this cross pendant exhibit a perfect 90 angle to each other, and both stand out in high relief against the matrix. Bezel-set in a hand-fabricated mount with a filigree bail made by a Russian silversmith. Height 1 in.
