An apprentice of Gerd Dreher, Alfred Zimmerman carved this piece while working in Dreher’s atelier. Also known for working in the Fabergé tradition, Zimmerman utilizes either soldiers, peasants in folkloric attire as subject matter. The present character study depicts a Ukrainian woman in a simple peasant costume. Her scarf and dress are carved of solid red jasper, her undergarments of white agate, her shoes and ill-fitted stockings of brown jasper. Her expressionless face is captured through the use of translucent beige-colored chalcedony. She stands on a polished, oval Russian nephrite base. Signed with monogram AZ for Alfred Zimmerman.
