A bi-valve mollusk—an unusual subject matter for a mineral carving—has been rendered in high-quality Afghani lapis lazuli of a deep blue color. The texturing is realistic, complete with barnacles and growth lines and the piece is highlighted with natural pyrite inclusions. A small white freshwater pearl rests in the interior. Length 2 in.
