Agate Carving of a Chimpanzee

By Gerd Dreher
Idar-Oberstein, Germany

Agate carving has been the mainstay of Idar-Oberstein production for over 500 years. Is it any wonder that Dreher has achieved such superb results in this depiction of a chimpanzee? Making use of the inherent color banding of the material to form the various parts of the chimp’s anatomy, the carving is exquisitely detailed and extremely realistic down to the folds of his skin and hair. Accompanied by an elongated oval cabochon of agate included in the fitted box to show the nature of the color banding. Signed with monogram GD for Gerd Dreher. Offered in a fitted grey suede box with the Dreher monogram. (2) Measuring 2 ¼ x 4 x 1 ½ in. Cabochon measuring 1 ½ x 1 x ½ in.
