Herkimer, New York
Herkimer diamonds are beautifully doubly-terminated quartz crystals already “faceted” by nature—they are so called because of their near “adamantine” luster. The bedrock in which the crystals are found began forming approximately half a billion years ago in a shallow Cambrian sea found just south of the ancient Adirondack Mountains. The present specimen is a highly aesthetic composition of three conjoined quartz crystals, the outline of which resembles a “scent bottle”. With perfect terminations, its excellent transparency allows a view of some fascinating inclusions, clues to the growth of the mineral crystal itself. Measuring 4 x 3 ¼ x 1 ½ in.
