Chuquicamata Mine
Calama, Antofagasta Province, Chile

A very rare and old beautiful copper mineral, these were found decades ago and more at the now defunct Chuquicamata Mine in Chile, once the world's largest open pit copper mine. This is the type locality where the species was first found and remains the only known location for good crystals of the species. The present specimen is an unusually rich and solid cluster of intergrown crystals of immense size making this possibly one of the largest surviving examples of the mineral. The saturation of color is exceptional, and the size makes it impressive for the collector of display specimens, even aside from the additional value of the scientific rarity. Measuring 3 ½ x 3 ¼ x 1 ½ in.

Footnotes
