Rogerley Mine
Frosterley County
Durham, England
The Rogerley Mine is located in the Weardale mining District of Northern England. First discovered by Lindsay Greenbank and Mike Sutcliffe in the early 1970's, it is presently the only mine in all of Britian to be worked commercially for the purpose of recovering crystallized mineral specimens. The region has been historically known for fluorites and was mentioned in “The Strata" by Westgarth Forster, published in 1821. The first book to document the geology of the Weardale region, Forster's descriptions of regional stratigraphy are still generally accepted today. The present impressive display specimen is from a recent find and features innumerable lustrous well-formed cubic crystals covering the surface of the limestone matrix. The color is a deep bluish-green hue so characteristic of fluorites of this region. Measuring 9 ½ x 6 x 4 ½ in.
