Dioptase

Tsumeb, Namibia
An unusually large specimen for the species, this rare, yet classic example of dioptase comes from the important and now defunct mining locality of Tsumeb. Very three-dimensional in form, it is carpeted with a thick layer of sugary, sparkling green crystals of this beautiful mineral. Exceptional for both its large size and the rich extent of coverage by its crystals, this is a significant specimen sure to grace even the most serious collection. Measuring 8 ¼ x 4 ½ x 3in.

Footnotes

Accompanied by a label from the collection of noted South African mineral dealer, Rob Smith.
