Calcite in Fossilized Clam Shell

Mercenaria Permagna
Ruck’s Pit, near Fort Drum,
Okeechobee County, Florida
Pleistocene

A small find of these clam shells was discovered in 2002 during an excavation for a civil engineering project. A fascinating specimen formed when “gemmy” calcite crystals grew in the natural pockets created by buried fossil clamshells. The interior of the shells now contain fine golden crystals of calcite. Not many fine mineral specimens come from Florida, of course! Height 4in.
