Macarani, Bahia, Brazil
Amazonite is a type of microcline feldspar colored blue to green by small amounts of lead, and possibly also affected by natural radiation over a lengthy period of geological time. Although its name is derived from the Amazon River, no deposits have been found there. The deposits in Minas Gerais and Bahia are considered to be the best in the world. This immense crystal, possibly the largest we have seen, is world-class in terms of its crystallography, color and aesthetics. It is notable not only for its large size, but also for the strength of its natural bluish-green color and precise crystals faces. While it is lapidary grade amazonite, it is a fortunate thing that the miners decided not to sell it for cabbing and carving material as its wonderful form would have been lost—it is a specimen with great architectural presence. Weighing 231 pounds and measuring 24 x 16 x 14in.
